Thanks to my music-obsessed YA site manager, Bec Stafford, I’m collecting a soundtrack to help me with the planning stage of Cowpunk – the Series. Eclectic so far, I know, but each artist is giving me a little bit of what I need to ignite the creative supernova. Recs accepted and acknowledged. I’d prefer you leave them here to Facebook so I can keep track of them. So far I have Psychobilly Freakout by Reverend Horton Heat (True Blood on speed) and Crystal Frontier by Calexica (from Bec). House Rules by Kane (from me and Rena) and Nosebleed Section by Hill Top Hoods (me – SO love the energy in this clip).

For cowpunk (I’m assuming similar to Western Steampunk or Wild Wild West or The Adventures of Brisco County Jr. type stuff) I’d definitely recommend:

All of Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti western soundtracks.

    Anything by Murder By Death.

  2. Marianne says:

Thanks Andrew, will check them out. Not western steam punk, more contemporary futuristic.

But still Western? So more Firefly/Serenity? If so, I’d still recommend the above. Also, Harry Manx – a lot of his work sounds like the Firefly music with added Eastern influences.

You seem to like a mix of music from what I can see above. I must say, I love the Hilltop Hoods, my husband got me started on them.

Here are a few songs I LOVE. I am sure you may not like them all, but its a mix of genres and you might find a gem among the bunch.

Another artist I love listening to when writing is Loreena McKennit, although I definitely have to be writing something specific for ehr music to suit, but figured I’d recommend her anyhow.

Good luck with the new series and have fun looking for new music!

ooh ooh I know one you have to listen to! kasey chambers, ‘pony.’ I’ve hardly listened to any of her music but I love that song completely.

When I grow up I want a pony!

Also the only country & westernish music I listen to is the Waifs.

  6. Marianne says:

Thanks Danielle. I’ll have fun going through those links.
And will check out Pony, Tans. Doesn’t have to be c&w as such. Hill Top Hoods are not c&w.

    Hi Marianne,

That’s wild – a cowpunk novel! Yee Haarrrr!

May I hunmbly, ahem, suggest my old band Some Kind of Justice? You can see the site here:

Have a listen to “Rednecks” – if you like it, please drop me an email, and I’ll send you the album and single. They’re on vinyl, so you’ll need arcane technology. There’s some great country punk numbers, such as “Colt 45″, “Hay Fever” and “Don’t Get Mad – Get Even”.

Incidentally, I can jus imagine “Muscle Car” on high rotation on Tara Sharp’s car stereo :)

The site has some links to other great Australian country punk bands such as The Chickenstones, Billy Pommer Jnr and Moral Majority.

As a WA native, I’m sure you’ll remember The Johnnys. Hoody played bass in Some Kind of Justice as well.

And for that swampy sound, you can’t go past Queenslander Brendan Kibble – now living in Austin TX.

The Navahodads clip is very lo-fi LOL. If you’re interested, I can probably dig up a CD for you

This should keep you busy listening for a while :)

    See you in Tamworth!

    Cheers,

    Ian

    Hi Ian,
many thanks for those suggestions. I’ll have a good listen when I’ve got the next deadline out of the way bit after a quick skim, SKOJ and The Texreys sounds like the right kind of music.

I can’t wait to have the time to get my soundtrack together properly. And yes, Tara Sharp would indeed enjoy!
