The Cooper Creek ferry is about to be put to use this week. It’s the first time in thirty years – since the last time the Birdsville Track flooded and they needed the ferry to cross. So all that time it’s just been city quietly in the dust … waiting …

Now that really inspires a story.

I’ve just heard from Tehani Wessely that Fablecroft Publishing will be reprinting my cow-punk story, Virgin Jackson in their upcoming anthology Australis Imaginarium. The story was originally published in agog! Smashing Stories edited by Cat Sparks.

I have such a strong affinity with this story that I’d actually love to write a novel series based on the character and world – just need a publisher to love it too. Maybe the right person will read Tehani’s antho!

Tehani says:

Boasting original cover art by Shaun Tan and award-winning stories by superstars of Australian speculative fiction such as Sean Williams, Margo Lanagan and Marianne de Pierres, Australis Imaginarium showcases Australian storytelling at its very best.

The Fablecroft site has a list of other confirmed stories. Publishing date September 2010.

Scott Sigler will be a guest at Parrish’s Patch from 6th-8th of June. And because I’m lazy, I’m pinching his official bio which goes like this …

New York Times best-selling novelist Scott Sigler is the author of ANCESTOR, INFECTEDand CONTAGIOUS, hardcover thrillers from Crown Publishing. Before he was published, Scott built a large online following by giving away his self-recorded audiobooks as free, serialized podcasts. His loyal fans, who named themselves “Junkies,” have downloaded over eight million individual episodes of his stories and interact daily with Scott and each other in the social media space, www.scottsigler.com.

I met Scott at Supanova this year, and the thing that really won me over to him – aside from the fact that he is smart, funny, cool and writes with an adrenaline syringe – he didn’t flicker an eyelid when I needed company to go to a strip club to research my new series.

Do yourself a favour and check out the trailer for his new book, Ancestor, released June 23rd. The last line in the trailer is an absolute kicker!

I’ve been working on my screenplay, Stalking Daylight, for Enchanter Films. It’s an experience I’m really enjoying, and has made me realise that I really do think in pictures. The form also suits my tendency to write lean. I’m not tempted to bloat things with too many words.

The original idea started out being reminiscent of Pitch Black, a movie I adore. But somewhere along the way, it’s become an individual. It’s like a child growing up and developing its own personality. Too weird!

Pretty soon I’ll be sending it to my co-writer Lynne Jamneck for her to decipher and make better. I now see know why film people are so adamant about their treatments. A good treatment can make writing the screenplay much easier, whereas a book outline … well let’s face it … the finished book is usually nothing like the synopsis.

Book launches fit into the category of *celebrations*, along with weddings, engagements and 21st’s. I’ve been to a lot, and had the good fortune of launching one or two. I’ve had my own, and been terrified and emotional the entire way through them.

In August this year, I get the privilege of launching a book written by one of my BFF’s, a writer I also greatly admire.

Trent Jamieson’s first novel, Death Most Definite, is soon to be released, and I get to tell a bunch of people, how lucky they are to get to read his work, and how he’s about to ascend the urban fantasy Kings’ dais to sit alongside Jim Butcher.

I wonder what they’ll call the TV series … The Stephen de Selby saga … Stephen de Selby scrolls, Stephen de Selby stories …

Alisa and I have pretty much finished the edit on my new Straddie story, which is set to go into the Glitter Rose collection. The name of the story is Mama Ailon (the meaning of which will be made clear when you read it), and I believe/hope it will be a fitting end to the quartet. We’ve selected some beautiful black and white internal illustrations from Australian artists, and Alisa let me twist her arm to to include a colour internal as well. The cover, by Anna Repp, is going to be sensationally unique, and I can’t wait to hold the finished book in my hand.

A dream I had many years ago, is going to come true in a few months.

My podcast from Supanova Perth is now available from the Supanova website. As I recall, I was talking about writing (little joke!) …
